Torriano Meeting House : November Sunday 25th 2018 - Prose Poem Poetics

An event part of the legendary Torriano Meeting House reading series, started in 1983 by John Rety and Susan Hill, this unique event will celebrate and explore poetry that places itself next to and against prose and poetics, exploring what poetry is by evoking what it is not. With Linda Black, Andrew Wells, Alison Graham, Julia Rose Lewis, Gareth Evans, Susie Campbell, Adriana Diaz Enciso, Mischa Foster Poole, Fabian Peake, SJ Fowler, Robert Vas Dias and Chrissy Williams.

"Torriano Meeting House  is a user-funded grass-roots volunteer-run arts and community organisation in Kentish Town. We are best known for our poetry events but we have many other long running strands including storytelling for adults, writing and storytelling workshops, hosting local political campaigning groups, theatrical events, left wing folk club, and we very much support grass-roots creativity and social change."

This event also served as the launch for "It Won't Go Well - Selected articles of SJ Fowler" from Kingston University Press.

From the publisher

“I find myself producing things I think forgettable, around ideas I sense are not.”

In this inquisitive and insightful book of essays, poet, writer and artist SJ Fowler asks questions of what it is to be a literary artist in this new century. Pushing poetry up against concepts like sex, violence, time, composition, collaboration and sound, Fowler funnels his own particular journey through writing into a select series of standalone essays which offer the reader a greater whole. Having become synonymous with a new generation of prolific 21st century British experimentalists, Fowler’s articles are accessible but intellectual, agile as well as understated, as perceptive as they are challenging.

The volume features nearly a dozen articles commissioned and / or published by Tate Modern online, The Learned Pig, The European Review of Poetry Books and Culture, Magma, Penned in the Margins, The International Literature Showcase, Atlantic Drift, The Poetry School and The British Council.

Two of the articles can be read online in previous forms below:

Julia Rose Lewis is the author of Phenomenology of the Feral (KFS 2017) and three pamphlets.  She and James Miller co-authored Strays (HVTN 2017).

Susie Campbell - I am currently applying to study for a prose poetry practice-based PhD and recently contributed a paper on the prose lyric to an international conference on the contemporary lyric hosted by Reading University. My poetry has been published in two pamphlets, The Bitters (Dancing Girl Press, 2014) and The Frock Enquiry (Annexe, 2015) and in a number of UK and international journals including Shearsman, Long Poem Magazine, 3AM, Zarf, Tears in the Fence and Cordite. For the last year, I have been poet-in-residence for the 2017-18 Mellon-Sawyer series: Post-War: Commemoration, Reconstruction, Reconciliation.
